Become an Analyst

Every day, our team of analysts is busy rating scientific research articles and related content for reliability and relevance.

What We Do – We Rate the Scientific Literature

Each research article is rated by two analysts. All of our analysts complete a training period that includes a thorough introduction to our methodology, as well as practice rating articles and other research content across fields. We purposefully assign each analyst a breadth of coverage over as many domains as possible to enhance each analyst’s familiarity with sources and science across the spectrum.

Analysts generally score articles similarly following our analysis training, regardless of their backgrounds; however, when significant differences occur, the analysts engage in a conversation during which analysts present their rationale for their respective scores and resolve any differences in as fair a manner as possible.

We do not rate the merits of a scientific claim, and we are not “sleuths” seeking to uncover problematic papers. Rather, we place the content where it descriptively belongs within the scientific record focusing on reliability of reporting and design as well as relevance to the community it serves.

When scoring for reliability, our method focuses on classifying content along a continuum including disclosure, study design, claims, and clarity. When scoring for relevance, our method emphasizes qualifications, communication practices, and language.

Analyzing all of the above in a systematic, repeatable way minimizes the impact of analyst bias on reliability and relevance scoring. It results in a rating of sources that many individuals, instructors, and other stakeholders find helpful in navigating today’s research and science claims ecosystem.
